Boraq , also Boragh and Buraq ( Persian براق, DMG borāq ), is an Iranian- made armored personnel carrier .

development

The standard version is based on a copy of the Soviet BMP-1 or the Chinese "Type 86". The armored personnel carrier was designed in 1996 and went into production that same year. Compared to the BMP, it is better armored and therefore needs a more powerful engine. The models are buoyant and have NBC protection devices . The outside of the rollers are similar to those of the M113 .

There are different versions known, which differ by different main armaments and equipment. Many vehicles are equipped with a heavy machine gun of the DSchK type or a mortar instead of the 73 mm cannon . There is also a model with a 20-mm or 30-mm automatic cannon and additional electronic equipment, which the BMP-2 is similar. A vehicle with a double anti-aircraft gun was shown at a parade in 2008 . The vehicle has infrared night vision equipment for the commander, driver and gunner.

In May 2002, the Iranian Defense Procurement Agency announced the development of three new variants of the Boragh: a 120mm mortar carrier, an ammunition carrier and an armored personnel carrier.

The Raad-1 self-propelled howitzer is based on the Boragh chassis.

Remarks

  1. The name "Boraq" for the tank ( Persian نفربر براق) comes from the white, horse-like mythical creature of the same name from the Koran, on which, according to the legend, Mohammed , a prophet in Islam , flew from earth to heaven and back during one night .
