The Boreč (German Boretzer Berg , formerly also Kahler Berg , Kahleberg ) is a mountain in the Bohemian Central Uplands on the left Elbe in the Czech Republic .

The air exhalations at the summit area with a temperature of up to 18 ° C, which are due to a special geological structure, are unique in winter. In 1951 the 11.23 hectare mountain was placed under protection as a national natural monument .

particularities

Scheme of the interior of the mountain

The entire mountain is criss-crossed by fissures in the volcanic rock. They enable a chimney effect that allows cool air to escape on the mountain flank in summer, but creates snow-free patches around the air outlet openings on the summit in winter. In the case of only moderately cold winter weather with snow cover, it sometimes happens that the entire summit area remains snow-free due to the warmth inside the mountain. The air flowing out reached an average of +10 ° C, with a peak value of up to 18 ° C.

In the frost-free areas, flora and fauna with insects and various mosses persist even in winter. The occurrence of a moss that is otherwise only found in the Mediterranean region is remarkable.

The phenomenon can also be observed in reduced intensity on the Milešovka ( Milleschauer ) and the Klíč ( Kleis ) in the Lusatian Mountains . On the Plešivec ( iceberg ), on the other hand, only the opposite seasonal effect can be observed - in the block heaps at the foot of the mountain, cold air escapes in summer.

Paths to the summit

The summit can be reached from the villages of Boreč and Režný Újezd via a nature trail. The summit region is forested and hardly allows any views. There are small viewpoints in places on the slopes.
