Boris Rodendorf

Boris Borissowitsch Rodendorf , also transcribed Boris Rohdendorf , Russian Борис Борисович Родендорф (born July 12, 1904 in Saint Petersburg ; † November 21, 1977 ) was a Russian paleontologist and entomologist.

Rodendorf was the son of the officer Boris Ludwig Rodendorf, who died in World War I. He studied zoology until 1924 at the Moscow State University and especially entomology and here Fly (Diptera). He then worked in plant protection against pests, for example in cotton cultivation in Tashkent or against grain mites and parasitic flies, partly at the All-Union Institute for Plant Protection in Leningrad. It was not until 1937 that he was again (at the invitation of Andrei Wassiljewitsch Martynow ) as a paleo-entomologist in research at the Paleontological Institute of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (PIN). There he headed the arthropod laboratory from 1938 until his death.

In addition to dipteras, he examined the development of insect flight, the evolution of the ontogenesis of insects, insect systematics and phylogeny and the co-evolution of insects and vertebrates.

He was the editor of a multi-volume Fundamentals of Paleontology (Osnovy paleontologii, published in 1991 by the Smithsonian in English translation), especially Volume 9 on arthropods. In it he wrote the chapter Diptera (1962).
