Boris Mitawski

Boris Mitawski ( Russian Борис Митавский ; born August 12, 1948 in Leningrad ; actually Boris Nikolajewitsch Ivanov ) is a Russian painter . He played a key role in the organization and implementation of the first exhibition of Russian artists in Leningrad, which was held in a private apartment.

Life

After completing his degree in chemistry, he studied art at the State Art School for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture I. Repin in Leningrad, the leading art school in the country.

Together with Sergei Kowalski and Wiktor Bogorad, he organized the first non-official art exhibition in Saint Petersburg in 1973, in which his works were presented to the public for the first time. The exhibition of this unofficial artist group Inaki took place in an only 11 m² apartment in Baskow-Weg.

In the further course of his artistic activity he appeared as a co-founder of the second wave of nonconformist art in the Soviet Union . In 1978 the artist group Letopis (= chronicle ) came into being, which organized exhibitions “in nature” and in a neglected church. An exhibition of this group held in the St. Petersburg Youth Palace in 1981 ended in scandal when the administration forbade contact between the artists and visitors and the exhibition ended three days earlier. In the same year Boris Mitavski and Jaroslaw Suchow founded the artist group Ostrow ( The Island ).

His artistic work was not limited to nonconformism, however, his earlier works show a journey through almost all styles of contemporary art, including abstractionism , constructivism , expressionism , surrealism and all forms of graphics . He also worked as an industrial designer for several years.
