Bosporus War

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bosporus War was a war between Genoa on the one hand and Venice and the Byzantine Empire on the other and took place between 1349 and 1352.

The conflicts between Byzantium, Venice and Genoa are typical of the political decline of the Byzantine Empire in the late Middle Ages . The Bosporus War developed out of the attempt by the Venetians to oust the Genoese from trade in the Byzantine Empire and to limit their trade privileges. The Byzantine Empire under Emperor John VI. Kantukuzenos (1347-1354) joined the Venetians. The focal point of the war was the capital of the Empire Constantinople and the surrounding area. However, after the Venetians withdrew their fleet without consulting the emperor, the Byzantines were defeated in a sea battle at the gates of their capital and the small Byzantine fleet was destroyed.
