Botanic Gardens garage

The Botanic Gardens Garage is a former garage and auto repair shop in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1989, the building was included as a single monument in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 2007.

history

In 1902 the first car was operated in Scotland. From the 1900s, street parking was prohibited, which is why barns were often converted. However, this was not possible everywhere in urban Glasgow. For this reason, commercial garage complexes to accommodate the vehicles were built in the decades that followed.

A Mrs. Kennedy had the building built. The earliest design is from 1906 by David Valentine Wyllie . The building was constructed in the same year, but the work presumably continued until 1912. It is believed to be the earliest purpose-built commercial garage in Scotland. Vehicle repairs were also carried out. In 1908 only three of these buildings were listed in Glasgow. Today specimens of this type are very rare. The Botanic Gardens Garage is believed to be the only surviving example of a two-story commercial garage in Scotland.

In 2007 the vacant building was added to the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. His condition was classified as poor in 2016, but with moderate risk.
