Mérida Botanical Garden
The Mérida Botanical Garden is located in the northern part of the city of Mérida in Venezuela .
It lies between the Albarregas and Mucujún rivers and was founded in 1991 by the Universidad de los Andes . It serves to preserve the flora and fauna and to research them. It was opened to visitors on December 8, 2002.
The botanical garden has an area of 44 hectares that was made available by the university for its development. It was divided into zones according to the type of plants that can be found there, most of the area is occupied by a forest of autochthonous pines. The most important collection of the botanical garden are the bromeliads , which are present in more than 100 species and 600 subspecies. It is the largest collection of bromeliads in South America.
