The Wandsbek Botanical Special Garden is a park in the east of Hamburg. It is called the Botanical Special Garden because the term botanical garden requires scientific support. The maintenance and management of the special garden is based at the Wandsbek district office.

location

The Botanical Special Garden is located in the Hamburg district of Hamburg-Wandsbek in the Wandsbek district of the same name . Its area extends over almost 2 hectares, of which 1.5 hectares are in the park area, the rest on buildings, greenhouses and driveway. The special garden is located between the streets Walddörferstraße and Am Schulgarten as well as the Wandse -Aue at the confluence of the Rahlau and Wandse near Fischers Park .

history

In 1923, today's special garden was laid out as a school garden by the Wandsbeker teachers' association. This is indicated by the name of the adjacent street Am Schulgarten . Thirty years later, in 1953, it was renamed with the current name of Botanischer Sondergarten Wandsbek. During the Second World War, vegetables were grown on the site to provide food for the population.

Today the special garden is mainly used for recreation and relaxation as well as for imparting knowledge about the plants that have been planted and exhibited. On average there are 500 visitors per day. Armchairs and benches invite you to linger.

Structure and scope

The special botanical garden in Wandsbek includes over 1,000 different plant species in the park, greenhouse and planter areas. The site is fenced, entry is free and open all year round. Access to the greenhouses is subject to different opening times. With numerous events, the garden is dedicated to imparting knowledge on the subject of botany. These range from holiday programs for children to plant swap sites and refinement courses for amateur fruit tree growers. Information about certain plants is offered on display boards in the greenhouses and on the Internet under the name Botanical Calendar Sheet.

Poisonous Plant of the Year

Every year since 2005, the Wandsbek Botanical Special Garden has praised the poisonous plant of the year . In the previous year, one plant from each of the categories herb, perennial, bush / tree is presented. The visitors to the special garden choose the poisonous plant of the year for next year. The plant is presented to visitors in the special garden with display boards throughout the year.
