Botond
Botond is an old Hungarian first name and family name.
It is believed that the meaning of the word comes from the Hungarian staff or stick (bot). A bot is likely to mean a staff weapon, spear or some kind of club. Botond therefore simply means the spear-bearer . Botos developed from this in modern Hungarian.
In the Botond epic, Anonymus mentions this name in his Gesta Hungarorum . The Turks (Magyars) who moved against Byzantium reached the city gates. Once there, the small Botond smashed the golden gate of the capital with his club. Furthermore, he fought with a Greek giant and defeated him.
