InuYasha - Swords of an Honorable Ruler ( Japanese 犬夜叉 天下 覇道 の 剣 , Inuyasha: Tenka Hadō no Ken , German about: "Inuyasha: The Swords of the Honorable Ruler") is an anime film from 2003. It is the third of four films for the anime television series Inu Yasha , which is based on a manga series by Rumiko Takahashi . The animation studio Sunrise produced the film.

action

The plot begins with a flashback, 200 years before the main plot and 700 years before the present. Inu Yasha's father Inu no Taishō (a Yōkai , Japanese demon) comes to the aid of his human lover Izayoi seriously injured after a fight against the dragon Ryukotsusei , because she is pregnant by him and her former admirer Setsuna no Takemaru wants to kill her and her son. Inu no Taishō manages to save her and her son Inu Yasha, but he dies together with Takemaru in the fire that broke out during the battle in Izayois Castle.

When Kagome and Inuyasha are once again in the present, their Kagome's grandfather is asked to safely seal an important sword in the temple's warehouse. But the sword, whose name Sōunga is on the scabbard, senses the presence of Tessaiga and develops a life of its own. Even the spirit Saja , who lives in the sword scabbard, cannot stop it. It takes possession of Inuyasha and tries to seduce him into excessive killing. He managed to flee back to the Middle Ages and got rid of the sword after a fight with his half-brother Sesshōmaru.

It turns out that Inuyasha's father owned three swords: Tenseiga, the sword of heaven, inherited from Sesshōmaru; Tessaiga, the sword of the human world entrusted to Inuyasha; and Sōunga, the sword of the underworld, the strongest of the three, which was sealed for seven hundred years. But this seal is broken now and Sōunga can only be defeated by Inu Yasha and Sesshōmaru or Tessaiga and Tensaiga together. Inuyasha and Sesshōmaru want to defeat the sword alone.

Meanwhile, Sōunga manages to find Takemaru's grave using an Onis . It takes possession of him and makes him hate Izayoi and her family. Takemaru now wants to take revenge on Inuyasha and Sesshōmaru and Sōunga wants to rule the world by opening the gates to the underworld and thus transforming all living beings into zombies over which it can rule. Sesshōmaru's companion, Rin and Jaken manage to get to Takemaru's castle and help Inuyasha. He can defeat Takemaru together with Sesshōmaru, but not Sōunga, which develops a life of its own. Despite not wanting to work together, the brothers finally manage to seal the sword in the underworld.

publication

InuYasha - Swords of an Honorable Ruler was released in Japanese cinemas on December 20, 2003, grossing 81 million yen . The film was also released in English , Spanish and Italian , among others .

The film was released on DVD by Red Planet in Germany in May 2006 . The synchronization of the film as well as the other three Inu-Yasha films was created by Red Planet together with the InuYasha-FanProjekt (IYFP), an internet fan project. Since the IYFP was involved in all phases of the synchronization, the version of the films differs significantly from the anime series despite the same speakers.

reception

According to the specialist magazine AnimaniA , “'Swords of an honorable Ruler' is a must for all friends of the series just because of Inuyasha's tragic birth scene .” One can also look forward to many encounters between Inu Yasha and Sesshōmaru, animated fights and emotional moments in front of an intoxicating backdrop . In the German implementation, the translation and advice provided by the IYFP was particularly praised.

The magazine MangasZene writes of "bloody skirmishes and a lot of tension, supplemented by a few pinches of humor." However, romantic moments and characters such as Naraku or Kikyō often represented in the series would be missing. Inuyasha and Sesshōmaru are at the center of the plot, but not as much is revealed about their past as one would expect at the beginning of the film. The character design and the animations are a feast for the eyes and the music underscores action-packed and thoughtful scenes.
