InuYasha - The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass ( Japanese 犬夜叉 鏡 の 中 の 夢幻 城 , Inuyasha: Kagami no Naka no Mugenjō , dt. "Inuyasha: The illusion castle in the middle of the mirror") is an anime film from 2002. It is the second of four films for the anime television series Inu Yasha , which is based on a manga series by Rumiko Takahashi . The animation studio Sunrise produced the film.

action

The film begins with Inuyasha , Kagome , Sango , Miroku and Shippō succeeding in defeating the Hanyō Naraku . There is no doubt about his death, as Miroku's "Kazaana" (wind hole) has disappeared and Kagura's heart has returned to her body. Inuyasha and Kagome then go in search of the remaining fragments of the jewel of the four souls. Miroku returns to his master and Sango goes in search of her brother Kohaku .

When Kagome briefly returns to the present, she learns about the legend of Princess Kaguya at school . This was a heavenly virgin from the moon who was found by a bamboo cutter in the forest. Kaguya gave her admirers unsolvable tasks before returning to the moon.

In the time after Naraku was defeated, the moon began to appear as a full moon every night. Miroku's master Mushin sees this as a bad omen and warns Miroku of a demon who wants to wrap the world in eternal night, which he learned from Miroku's grandfather's will. When Kagome comes back from the present and goes on a search for the jewel shards with Inuyasha and Shippo, they meet Kagura and Kanna . They engage the friends in a fight and Kagura tears off a piece of Inuyasha's fire rat cloak. When Kaguya wants to finish them off, Kaguya appears and uses her abilities to direct Inuyasha's attack against him. Kagome is able to prevent Inuyasha from taking greater harm, but Kaguya realizes her priestly powers and her belonging to another time.

While the friends are now on their way to Kaguya, they come across Akitoki Hōjō, an ancestor of a classmate of Kagome, who is supposed to destroy a ceremonial robe ( 羽衣 , hagoromo , German "feathered robe ") in the Fuji volcano . He joins the group, also because he fell in love with Kagome.

When Miroku and his friend and servant, the Dachsyōkai ( Tanuki ) Hachi, travel to the grave of his grandfather Miatsu to find out more about the demon, they hear of Kaguya's legend. Miroku's grandfather is said to have put the princess in a mirror, but was unable to kill her because of her beauty. Her Hagoromo was left to a family that would destroy it should Kaguya be freed. Meanwhile, Kagura and Kanna also steal items from Kohaku and Kikyō. With all the items that Kagura and Kanna have stolen, they free Kaguya from her mirror. When she is looking for her Hagoromo, she comes across Inu Yasha's group. You manage to defeat Inu Yasha, take her Hagoromo and kidnap Kagome.

Inu Yasha, Miroku, Kohaku and Sango then move to Kaguyas Castle to free Kagome and prevent Kaguya from stopping time by means of a ceremony in order to envelop the world in eternal night. The friends manage to free Kagome and Inu Yasha is able to get the part of his cloak back and thus prevent the ceremony. But then Kaguya manages to wake up part of Inu Yasha's demonic side, whereupon he even attacks Miroku, who tries to bring him to his senses, and seriously injures him. Only a kiss from Kagome brings him back to his senses. It turns out that Kaguya is a demon who devoured the true moon princess. In the fight between Inuyasha and her, Naraku appears from the body of Kohaku, who has only faked his death. He wants to devour the demon Kaguya in order to become stronger, but could not defeat her himself. However, he escapes with Kanna, Kagura and Kohaku. In the end it is possible to finally kill Kaguya together and her Hagoromo is sacrificed to Fujiyama.

publication

InuYasha - The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass hit Japanese theaters on December 21, 2002, grossing 1.05 billion yen . The film was also released in English , Spanish and Italian , among others .

The film was released on DVD by Red Planet in March 2006 in Germany . The synchronization of the film as well as the other three Inu Yasha films was created by Red Planet together with the InuYasha Fan Project (IYFP), an internet fan project. Since the IYFP was involved in all phases of the synchronization, the version of the films differs significantly from the anime series despite the same speakers.

background

The Princess Kaguya is borrowed from an old Japanese fairy tale. Kaguya is sent to earth as a baby because of a war and grows up with a bamboo cutter. Because of her beauty, she had many admirers, but refused all of them because they could not solve their tasks. The items required of the devotees to find are used by Inuyasha as those required to free Kaguya from the mirror. When the war in heaven ended, Kaguya returned. The legend was also used in Sailor Moon .

The film is also based on a story that tells of a holy virgin ( Tennyō ). This would appear on earth to bathe in hot springs. A man stole her ceremonial robe (Hagoromo) and she could not go back to heaven. So she married the thief. So she got her robe back and could go back to heaven. This story is used in many other anime and manga and is spread in different versions in large parts of Asia and also in Europe as the saga of the swan maidens.

reception

According to the specialist magazine AnimaniA , fans could “look forward to a healthy mix of fantasy and action.” The story seems more sophisticated than the first film and comes up with a romantic climax. The German implementation with the help of IFYP was also praised.
