Botrivier is named after the river of the same name. The Khoikhoi tribes who used to graze their cattle here called the river Couga , which can be translated as "high-fat" or "a lot of butter". The early European settlers then adopted this name. The river flows into a large lagoon and forms a swamp near its mouth known as the Botrivier Lagoon. This wetland is home to thousands of water birds and a small herd of wild horses .
history
In 1731 Daniel Malan was assigned the area around Botterivier as grazing land. The Compagnes Drift farm was founded there in 1806 and has kept this name to this day. A large part of the present day village is in the area of the former farm.
