Until the opening of the new building in 2017, the embassy had been located in the former café of the Associação Comercial, Agrícola e Industrial de Timor (ACAIT) in Rua 30 de Agosto , house number 2 since April 2000.The embassy was officially only received on the day of East Timor’s independence on December 20 May 2002 her status. The new property was soon made available to Portugal by East Timor, but it wasn't until May 21, 2012 that Portugal's President Aníbal Cavaco Silva laid the foundation stone. The new embassy headquarters was presented on October 2, 2017, and the move will take place from October 5 to 9. The date for the official opening is still open.

The new building next to the headquarters of the Sporting Clube de Timor consists of a complex of two buildings. The embassy offices are located in one, and a cultural center with a library, an exhibition room and a lecture room in the second. Rooms with a total of 2700 square meters are available on the ground floor and first floor.

The embassy complex was built on May 31, 2014 within three years by the Portuguese company Ensul, together with the companies NLA and IDA-TL. Construction costs were $ 3.9 million.
