The United States Embassy in Moscow is the diplomatic representation of the United States in the Russian Federation .

location

The embassy is located in the Central Administrative District in the Presnensky district , and has an area of around five hectares between the garden ring and Konyushkowskaya Street, not far from the zoo . The address of the embassy is 8 Große Devyatinski-Gasse .

history

In 1934 the embassy had its first seat right next to the Kremlin at 13 Mokhovaya Street . From 1941 to 1943 it was in Samara (then Kuibyshev). In 1953 she moved into the building on Novinski Boulevard 21 (then Tchaikovsky Street ), which was built between 1941 and 1952 in the style of Stalinist classicism , which belongs to the Gartenring.

According to a contract signed in 1972, the United States received approximately 53,000 square meters of land for the embassy for a period of 85 years. (A similar contract was signed in 1969 for the Soviet embassy in Washington .) One building was demolished in 1987 - allegedly due to the discovery of a large number of eavesdropping devices that had been in the walls of the building since it was built. Only the main building was rebuilt in 2000 according to revised plans.

The old building on Nowinski Bouleward, which also remained in the possession of the USA and is a good target due to its location, was shot at by an RPG-26 grenade launcher on September 13, 1995 . The attack, in which no one was injured, was likely in revenge for Operation Deliberate Force in the Bosnian War. During Operation Allied Force in the Kosovo War on March 28, 1999, the building was again unsuccessfully shelled with the RPG-18 grenade launcher. This time the militia was prepared and acted quickly.

The ambassador resides in the mansion not far from the embassy at Spasopeskowski-Gasse 10 . This building was built in 1915 in the neoclassical style. There lived Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan during their visits to Moscow.

The embassy also has a dacha in Moscow's Serebryanny Bor nature reserve and storage rooms. After the US authorities confiscated Russian diplomatic property in the US in violation of the Vienna Convention , the Russian authorities prohibited the US embassy from using the dacha and the warehouse on August 1, 2017.

Jon Huntsman junior has been the American ambassador since 2017 .
