Embassies - The Berlin Embassy is a work by the German artist Silvia Klara Breitwieser . It consists of a total of 32 sign objects, which are set up in the Alte Jakobstrasse , the street Am Berlin Museum and the Lindenstrasse in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg . It is part of an eleven-part exhibition entitled Art - City - Space of the Berlinische Galerie , which can be seen in public space.

construction

The installation consists of 32 sign objects, which at first glance look like an ordinary street sign . The mast of every sign is made of hot-dip galvanized iron, the signs are made of aluminum, which is coated with plastic. The work was created in 1996 and 1997 and is on permanent loan from the artist.

symbolism

With the work, the artist wanted to create a connection between the Jewish Museum and the Berlinische Galerie - the shortest route from one museum to another is via this very street. In order to prepare the visitors to the houses for an exciting museum visit, she had previously asked 30 museums from East and West for a statement on the state of art . This assessment of the future of art was intended to create a virtual roof between the two museums, under which the visitor can move from one museum to the other. The visitor can now read these statements on one side of the sign. On the other side is indicated who made this statement.

Environment of the exhibition

Since the Berlinische Galerie cannot maintain its own sculpture garden due to lack of space, the idea arose to transform the area around the gallery into a public art space. This is intended to signal to walkers who are looking for museums such as the Jewish Museum here in southern Friedrichstadt : "I'm sure I'm right here."
