Art - city - space

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The art collection Art - City - Space is an ensemble of the Berlinische Galerie in southern Friedrichstadt in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg . It consists of a total of 11 works of art and objects that were arranged around the museum.

background

The Berlinische Galerie is located in a residential area that was shaped by the Second World War and the construction of the Berlin Wall . Many buildings were destroyed or badly damaged in the war. In the neighboring Lindenstrasse you can only find the Victoria building in the old building stock ; all other houses were demolished, including the Lindenstrasse synagogue in today's Axel-Springer-Strasse .

With the construction of the wall, this part of Kreuzberg fell into the margins of the public. The International Building Exhibition in 1984 was to change that. With the support of social housing , these areas were developed as residential areas again. Well-known architects such as Hans Kollhoff or John Hejduk built large apartment buildings here. Even after the redevelopment, larger green spaces were retained or newly laid out, but the gallery could not fall back on a larger plot of land for its own sculpture park . Therefore, the idea came up to use the surroundings of the gallery for a public sculpture park. It was assumed that tourists and walkers looking for museums such as the Jewish Museum in this part of the city will come across the sculptures by chance and will recognize: "I'm definitely right here."

Works of art and objects

The objects are distributed around the Berlinische Galerie. Some are located in Axel-Springer-Straße, Lindenstraße, but also in Ritterstraße or in the immediate vicinity of the gallery in Alte Jakobstraße .

These are the following eleven objects:

  2. Silvia Klara Breitwieser : Messages - The Berlin Embassy , 1996/1997, in the street Am Berlin Museum

The objects in the immediate vicinity of the gallery are the result of an art competition organized by the Senate Cultural Administration. The other objects are partly on permanent loan and partly donations. The entire ensemble should not have a static character, but should change with new acquisitions.
