Sculpture Escape from the time of Rolf Szymanski in Berlin-Kreuzberg

The sculpture Escape from Time is the work of the German sculptor Rolf Szymanski . It stands in the Alte Jakobstrasse in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg in front of the Café Dix, which belongs to the Berlinische Galerie . It is part of an eleven-part exhibition entitled Art - City - Space of the Berlinische Galerie, which can be seen in public space.

construction

The work consists of a sculpture measuring 200 × 154 × 73 cm and is made of bronze . It was created between 1992 and 2004 and was set up in 2004 as a gift from the Piepenbrock Group in Alte Jakobstrasse.

symbolism

In this sculpture too, like the water carrier, Szymanski goes back to the past. The long history of the creation of the work shows that the artist constantly questioned his own actions in the past: “To flee from time does not mean to flee from time.” People are asked to draw energy from the past for the future to create in order to actively shape this future. The artist got the idea for this work from a 2000 year old sandal that he saw in the Jerusalem Museum . If you look at the foot of the sculpture, you can see a sandal loop there.

The sculpture thus joins a whole series of similarly designed works such as Black Sun Press . Szymanski is reported to have the utopia of “finding that piece with a lump of material that outweighs life”.

Environment of the exhibition

Since the Berlinische Galerie cannot maintain its own sculpture garden due to lack of space , the idea arose to transform the area around the gallery into a public art space. This is intended to signal to walkers who are looking for museums such as the Jewish Museum in southern Friedrichstadt : "I'm sure I am right here."
