Sculpture Black Sun Press by Rolf Szymanski in Berlin-Kreuzberg

The sculpture Black Sun Press is the work of the sculptor Rolf Szymanski . It stands on the median of Lindenstrasse in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg . It is part of an eleven-part exhibition entitled Art - City - Space of the Berlinische Galerie , which can be seen in public space.

construction

The work consists of a sculpture with the dimensions 177 × 69 × 88.5 cm and is made of bronze . It was created between 1969 and 1973 and was placed on permanent loan from Galerie Brusberg in Lindenstrasse in 1991 .

symbolism

The Berlinische Galerie describes the sculpture as follows:

“A volcanically troubled body stands defenseless and vulnerable before us. The figure reaches out and withdraws into itself, it pulsates and breathes in overlapping and penetrating volumes. With her breasts, bulges, hanging, then everting masses, but also almost violent depressions, the emphasis is shifted upwards in baroque agitation. The person stands at an incline on narrow legs, unsteady in the room. He takes his individual experiences of burning reality into his body, confronts us in his turmoil as well as in the fullness of life, in his ephemeral architecture of sensual carnality. Shaped from earth, poured in ore. "

- Berlinische Galerie

The sculpture thus joins a whole series of similarly designed works such as the water carrier or the Warsaw mermaid . Szymanski is reported to have the utopia of “finding that piece with a lump of material that outweighs life”.

Environment of the exhibition

Since the Berlinische Galerie cannot maintain its own sculpture garden due to lack of space , the idea arose to transform the area around the gallery into a public art space. This is intended to signal to walkers who are looking for museums such as the Jewish Museum in southern Friedrichstadt : "I'm sure I am right here."
