Sculpture Water Carrier by Rolf Szymanski in Berlin-Kreuzberg

The sculpture Wasserträgerin is the work of the German sculptor Rolf Szymanski . It stands on the median of Lindenstrasse in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg . It is part of an eleven-part exhibition entitled Art - City - Space at the Berlinische Galerie , which was shown in the city's public space in 2005.

construction

The work consists of a sculpture with the dimensions 239 cm × 96 cm × 110 cm and is made of iron . It was created in 1981 and was taken over in 1998 by the Senate Department for Building, Housing and Transport from the sculpture garden at the radio tower in Lindenstrasse.

symbolism

The Berlinische Galerie describes the sculpture as follows:

“Carrying water is an ancient, primeval , archetypal activity to survive. Here it has become a symbol. This figure confronts us like a monument to endangered existence. With over-elongated, powerful “arms” that touch the ground like a giant divining rod , she stands firm and secure, connected to the earth, absorbing the currents of power from the world. But she draws the energy from the space behind her, as if she is reaching back into her own history in order to look unswervingly into the imponderables of the future, revealing her body. In all her idolism, the water carrier is at the same time imbued with hope and humanity. "

- Berlinische Galerie

The sculpture joins a whole series of similarly designed works such as Black Sun Press or the Warsaw Mermaid .

Environment of the exhibition

Since the Berlinische Galerie cannot maintain its own sculpture garden due to lack of space, the idea arose to transform the area around the gallery into a public art space. This is intended to signal to walkers who are looking for museums such as the Jewish Museum in southern Friedrichstadt : "I'm sure I'm right here."
