Jabu Khanyile

Jabu Khanyile (born February 28, 1957 in Soweto , † November 12, 2006 ) was a South African musician and lead singer in the band Bayete .

Life

After his mother's death at the age of 14, Khanyile was forced to drop out of education and earn a living. His father was a miner and performed traditional a cappella songs. His brother John played in a reggae and soul - cover band . Khanyile also turned to music and became a member of the local band The Daffodils . In 1974 he joined his brother John The Editions' band as a drummer , later becoming the band's lead singer. In 1977 he moved to The Movers , and in 1984 Khanyile joined Bayete as a drummer. The band combined afrobeat , jazz and reggae. Bayete disbanded in 1992 and Khanyile began a solo career with releases under the name Jabu Khanyile & Bayete , although none of the original Bayete members were involved. Khanyile gained international fame after performing at the 1996 Royal Gala Evening in honor of Nelson Mandela .

Khanyile has performed internationally with Youssou N'Dour , Angélique Kidjo and Papa Wemba . He was known for his pan-African approach to music and tried to combine different African styles. He usually appeared in a Masai costume with a fly whisk, an African symbol for kings.

In 2005 Khanyile performed at the Live 8 concert in Johannesburg . He last appeared in public in July 2006, when the handover of the soccer World Cup to South Africa was celebrated in Berlin .

He died in November 2006 of diabetes and prostate cancer .
