Factory marking of the Kuehn Malvezzi glass warehouse in Berlin-Kreuzberg

The work Marker Glaslager is a design for the forecourt of the Berlinische Galerie by the Berlin architects Kuehn Malvezzi . It is located in front of the entrance to the gallery on Alte Jakobstrasse in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin . The forecourt design is part of an eleven-part exhibition entitled Art - City - Space of the gallery, which can be seen in public space.

construction

The work consists of a field of letters that were applied to the asphalt. It was created between 2003 and 2004 as the result of an art competition for the design of outdoor spaces in the Berlinische Galerie.

The letter field consists of the following letters and names the following artists:

symbolism

The work immediately catches the eye when you approach the gallery. It is only on closer inspection that one realizes that it is not a senseless collection of letters: Rather, it consists of 160 artist names that have been strung together without interruption. The artists can be seen with works or groups of works in the gallery. If you break away from the names, new, sometimes bizarre -looking names emerge , which are supposed to be reminiscent of Dadaism . The designation glass warehouse reminds us that the hall of the Berlinische Galerie was once used as a glass warehouse. Neighborhoods include the still located Guild of Glaserhandwerks Berlin.

Environment of the exhibition

Since the Berlinische Galerie cannot maintain its own sculpture garden due to lack of space , the idea arose to transform the area around the gallery into a public art space. This is intended to signal to walkers who are looking for museums such as the Jewish Museum in southern Friedrichstadt : "I'm sure I am right here."
