Friedrich Seidenstücker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Seidenstücker (born September 26, 1882 in Unna , † December 26, 1966 in West Berlin ) was a German photographer . He was best known for his photographs of everyday life, animal photographs and nudes, as well as his pictures of the ruins of Berlin, which was destroyed in World War II.

life and work

Seidenstücker initially studied mechanical engineering in Hagen between 1901 and 1903 . In 1904 he continued his studies at the Royal Technical University of Charlottenburg , but was also occupied with sculpture and photography . During the First World War he worked as an aircraft designer at Zeppelin-Bau AG in Potsdam . In 1918 he began studying sculpture at the College of Fine Arts with the animal sculptor August Gaul . Between 1921 and 1923 he went on study trips to Munich , Rome and Paris .

Seidenstücker then worked as a freelance sculptor and photographer in Berlin. He was far more successful as a photographer than as a sculptor. Even so, he often had to rely on financial support from his family. He made a name for himself primarily as an animal photographer for the Berlin Zoological Garden , with motifs from everyday life in Berlin and nude portraits. In 1930 he became a permanent employee of Ullstein Verlag . His recordings have appeared in magazines such as the neue linie , the Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung , Die Dame , Der Cross section and Die Woche . After 1945 Seidenstücker was again a freelance photographer in Berlin. From this time his photo series about the destroyed Berlin, especially about the zoo, became known.

One last major exhibition of his works was held on the occasion of Seidenstücker's 80th birthday in Berlin. Later his work was forgotten. His estate was discovered in 1971 at a second-hand dealer and bought for DM 500 from the Prussian Cultural Heritage Image Archive . In the 1980s his rediscovery began as a “flaneur” among photographers. A comprehensive retrospective on Friedrich Seidenstücker with over 200 original photographs took place in the Berlinische Galerie from October 2011 .
