Erwin Hegemann

Erwin Hegemann (born February 26, 1924 in what is now Wuppertal ; † August 21, 1999 on Bornholm ) was a German artist.

Erwin Hegemann is considered one of the best portrait painters in Germany after the Second World War . He was also active as a graphic artist , sculptor and in other areas of art . He worked in Hagen until the end of his life .

Life

Born in what would later become Wuppertal , Hegemann moved to Hagen with his family in 1930 . In 1938 he began an apprenticeship as a poster painter there. In 1941 he began studying free and applied painting and graphics (specializing in portraits) at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , but was drafted into the Reich Labor Service as early as 1942 . Imprisonment, escape and internment follow . From 1951 to 1956 he worked at the commercial vocational school in Hagen . From 1989 to 1995 Hegemann was a lecturer at the Academy for Fine Arts in Vulkaneifel . He died on August 21, 1999 on the island of Bornholm.

The Erwin Hegemann School , a community elementary school in the city of Hagen, is named after him.
