Bodnath
Bodnath (also Boudha , Boudnath , Nepali : बौद्धनाथ Bauddhanāth ) is a suburb in the northeast of Kathmandu in Nepal .
Bodnath is known for the large stupa , which has been one of the most important destinations for Buddhist pilgrims from Nepal and the surrounding regions of the Himalayas for centuries . The foundation goes back to the Licchavi in the 5th century AD. With a height of 36 meters, the stupa is one of the largest of its kind.
Buddhists mainly come to the building at dawn and dusk to go around it clockwise ( kora ). On full moon nights (see Vesakh festival), thousands of butter lamps are lit on the terraces that surround the stupa in the shape of a mandala . Once a year the hemispherical building is whitewashed and the saffron-colored arches are renewed for the Losar New Year festival .
The stupa was damaged in the earthquake in Nepal on April 25, 2015 . To carry out the repair, the entire tip was removed and rebuilt. The consecration of the restored stupa took place in November 2016.
