Bouillotte , also known as Brelan , is a historic French card game of chance that was very popular during the French Revolution and later again in the 1830s . Bouillotte, like Brag and Poch, is to be regarded as a forerunner of the poker game.

Bouillotte is played by three to five people with a package of piquet cards (32 sheets of French playing cards ). With five players the sevens are removed, with four players also the jacks and with three players also the women.

Before a game, each player pays a token ( counter , chip ) as an ante into the pot. The first player after the forehand ( Age ) can raise the pot just like the other players . Those who do not want to go ( seeing the raise ) have to get out.

Each player receives three cards, the following card - the thirteenth in the case of four players - is called a return and is served openly.

After that, each player must either bet , call , raise or drop out .

When the betting round is over, the cards are revealed and the highest hand wins the pot. The ranking of the hands is:

  • Brelan carré : Four of a kind with the return as one of the four cards.
  • Brelan simple : three of a kind. If two players hold three of the same values, the rank decides, the ace is the highest card.
  • Brelan favori : Three of a kind with the return as one of the three cards.

If no player has a Brelan, the hands are rated according to their eyes ( pips ), the ace counts eleven points, the figure cards each ten points.
