Boulevard Anspach
Boulevard Anspach (French) or Anspachlaan (Dutch) is a boulevard in downtown Brussels , Belgium .
The Boulevard Anspach connects the Place de Brouckère (de Brouckèreplein) with the Place Fontainas (Fontainasplein). It is named after Jules Anspach , a former mayor of Brussels. Before 1879 it was called Boulevard Central . It was built over the Senne and the river was channeled. Many sights are located on Boulevard Anspach, for example the Brussels Stock Exchange and the “Ancienne Belgique” concert hall, as well as many shops and restaurants.
In keeping with the motto “De voetganger wordt koning” (“The pedestrian becomes king”), Boulevard Anspach was provisionally converted into a pedestrian zone from June 2015; the definitive expansion is planned for 2017/2018. The Boulevard Anspach and some of the surrounding streets form a large pedestrian area together with the Great Town Hall Square and adjacent alleys.
