Jules Anspach

Jules Anspach (* 1829 ; † 1879 ) was a Belgian lawyer, mayor of Brussels and member of the Belgian House of Representatives . Anspach has significantly shaped the face of downtown Brussels through his extensive urban development measures.

Life

Anspach was born into a Brussels Calvinist family who immigrated to Belgium from Geneva. His father François Anspach († 1858) was a member of the Belgian House of Representatives. Jules Anspach studied law at the University of Brussels and graduated with a doctorate. Like many liberal Belgian politicians of the time, Anspach was a Freemason .

Anspach achieved a rapid rise in the Brussels city administration, already at the age of 34 he became mayor, an office that he held until his death. He was significantly involved in the urban redesign of Brussels in the style of historicism , comparable to the construction work carried out at the same time by Baron Haussmann in Paris.
