Bovo II.
Bovo II. († 916 ) was Abbot of Corvey from 900 to 916 . He was a connoisseur of Boethius and was at the beginning of the medieval discussion of (late) ancient philosophy.
Life
For the settlement of Horhusen, today Niedermarsberg , he received from King Ludwig III. the market and coinage rights. In addition, there was the authorization to collect customs duties there. After Conrad's election as king, he also came to Corvey and confirmed the monastery its old rights. Despite royal protection, the Hungarians advanced as far as Corvey several times. In 915, the monks were even forced to flee temporarily into the woods.

Bovo was learned. Adam von Bremen mentions an author with this name who wrote a paper about the events of his time. Possibly it was this Bovo, but it was also Bovo I. and even Bovo III. called.
Bovo II was familiar with the ancient languages, including Greek. Widukind von Corvey reported that Bovo had read a letter written in Greek to King Konrad, which would have earned him not inconsiderable admiration. He dealt intensively with Boethius. To the consolation of philosophy , he wrote a comment. Bovo recognized that the creation myth in the third book of the Consolatio of Boethius contained Platonic thoughts and was actually incompatible with the Christian faith. In particular, Bovo argued that the idea of a world soul organizing the cosmos was alien to Christianity. Although Bovo had understood that Boethius' text should not be called Christian, he still admired it. In his commentary he also operated with the terms of ancient philosophy and sought to define them.
