Bow Wow Wow was a British new wave band formed by Malcolm McLaren in 1980 .
Career
Band members were Matthew Ashman (guitar), Leigh Gorman (bass) and David Barbarossa (drums), who were poached by McLaren from the band Adam and the Ants , as well as the underage singer Annabella Lwin when the band was founded.
As Ashman, Gorman and Barbarossa practically took over the entire rhythm section of the Ants , the sound of both groups is very similar, to which the drum sound of Barbarossa, inspired by rhythms from Burundi , contributed significantly. Producer McLaren, who had previously made the Sex Pistols , but also Adam and the Ants known, discovered singer Lwin in the dry cleaning of her parents in London and tried hard to portray the minors as naked or half-naked as possible (* October 31 1966) to generate publicity scandals on the record covers. The future Culture Club singer Boy George was also a member of Bow Wow Wow for a short time .
In July 1980 they released the single "C · 30 C · 60 C · 90 Go", which was originally only to appear as a (first ever) cassette single. The 7 ″ single then reached number 34 in the UK single charts.
The first top 10 hits were Go Wild in the Country and the then released song I Want Candy (a cover version of a track by The Strangeloves ). The group existed until the separation in 1983. The instrumentalists then tried unsuccessfully as Chiefs of Relief a further group career, even the solo career of Annabella in 1985 was not crowned with success.
In the 1990s, David joined Barbarossa Republica . Matthew Ashman died of diabetes in 1995. Gorman and Lwin formed a reunion of Bow Wow Wow in 1998 .
