Bowden Church
The Bowden Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland . It is near the Scottish village of Bowden in the Scottish Borders Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists of the highest monument category A.
history
As early as 1180, a church building on the site was described, which was subordinate to the Kelso Abbey . However, as no Romanesque fragments are visible today, it is assumed that this building was completely demolished. Although individual wall fragments probably date from the 15th century, the main elements of today's church were created in the 17th century. Roxburghe Aisle and Cavers Aisle date from the 1660s. Presumably in 1794 and again in 1909 it was restored to Bowden Church.
description
Bowden Church is isolated in the middle of the surrounding cemetery about 300 m south of Bowden. The Bowden Burn brook separates them from the village . The elongated building is simply designed. Inside, the wooden gallery des Lairds deserves a mention. During restoration work, evidence was found that the nave once closed with a barrel vault . Gravestones dating back to 1707 can be found in the surrounding cemetery. Various illegible stones, however, may be of an older date.
