Bowden is a village in the center of the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders or in the traditional county of Roxburghshire . It is located about three kilometers south of Melrose and eight kilometers east of Selkirk on the Bowden Burn stream , which flows into the Tweed at Newtown St Boswells . To the north rise the three distinctive extinct volcanoes of the Eildon Hills .

history

In 1124 there is a mention of the village as Bothenden . In 1180 a church building on the site was described, which was subordinate to the Kelso Abbey . This was probably demolished for the construction of today's Bowden Church , the oldest fragments of which date from the 15th century. During the 16th century, the Kers of Cessford , who would later form the line of the Dukes of Roxburghe , built a castle there called Holydean Castle , which was used as the ancestral seat of the Dukes. Before 1793 the building was demolished. The burial place of the Dukes of Roxburghe is in Bowden Church.

traffic

Bowden is on a back road leading to Newtown St Boswells. The A699 , which connects Selkirk with Kelso , runs a few hundred meters south . The A68 to the east and the A7 to the west can be reached within a few kilometers .
