from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Boyne Island aluminum smelter is operated by Boyne Smelters Limited, northwest of the city of Boyne Island , Queensland , Australia, as a joint venture in which the majority of the shares are held by the Australian company Rio Tinto Alcan , a wholly-owned subsidiary of the global mining company Rio Tinto .

business

The company started operating the aluminum smelter in 1982 and was able to produce 260,000 tons of aluminum annually until 1997 ; since then the capacity has been expanded to 558,000 tons. As of 2004, the smelter will be able to emit energy released for the production of cement. In 2009, 1165 people were employed in the hut.

The aluminum smelter is supplied with alumina via a 10-kilometer conveyor belt from Queensland Alumina Limited , which operates an alumina refinery in Gladstone . The bauxite comes from the Weipa bauxite mine in northern Queensland. The entire production chain is operated by Rio Tinto Alcan.

The aluminum smelter is a large-scale industrial plant that uses smelting electrolysis to produce aluminum using a lot of energy. In the Hall-Héroult process , pure aluminum is obtained from aluminum oxide using fused- salt electrolysis. Here, aluminum with a melting temperature of 2045 ° C is mixed with cryolite in order to lower the melting temperature, which means that the melting temperature can be lowered to 950 ° C, which enables electrolysis.

Shares

According to the published information, 59.39% of the shares in the aluminum smelter were owned by Rio Tinto Alcan, 9.5% YKK Aluminum (Australia) Pty Ltd , 9.29% SLM Australia Limited (SLMA), 7.71% SLMA No 2 Pty Limited , 6.46% Ryowa Development II Pty Limited , 5.19% Ryowa Development Pty Limited (all Australia) and 2.46%  Sumitomo Chemical (Japan).
