A bridge near Stratton in Hitchcock County in the US state of Nebraska is the oldest documented concrete bridge in the state. The bridge, built in 1908, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Location and description

The bridge is located approximately 2 miles east of the village of Stratton. It consists of a 20 foot (approx. 6.1 meters) long and 18 foot (approx. 5.5 meters) wide reinforced concrete slab . The lettering 08 Ideal Cement can be read on both sides of the concrete slab , which was embossed by sandblasting . The bridge spans a nameless, only periodically flowing stream. US Highway 34 runs about 150 meters north .

Apart from maintenance repairs, the bridge is in its original condition.

history

The bridge was built in 1908 by the Ideal Cement Company . It is very likely that the design for the structure came from the state engineer of Nebraska at the time, as he began developing concepts for smaller concrete bridges from 1908 onwards. When US Highway 34 was built through Nebraska, the bridge was integrated into its course. The highway was later relocated to the north, and today a dirt road leads over the bridge, which is rarely used by traffic.
