leaves

Brachychiton discolor is slightly succulent, the thick trunk with greenish bark, which is gray in older trees, is only slightly bottle-shaped at the base. The tree tolerates drought very well. The leaves are dark green, hairy silver-white underneath, hand-shaped and three- to seven-, usually five-lobed. Their diameter is 8 to 18 centimeters, the length of the petiole 5 to 10 centimeters. The Spreitengrund is heart-shaped (cordat).

The bell-shaped flowers are three to four inches long, hairy on the outside and red, pink or magenta in color. They appear from late spring to summer (November to March) after the tree sheds the leaves.

Five bellows per flower are formed as fruits . They lignify, have grown together at the base and, when opened, have the shape of boats. They contain large, yellow seeds embedded in irritant hair.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.
