history

The company was formed when the Bradford & Bingley Building Society went public on December 4, 2000. Bradford & Bingley was previously owned by its customers as a housing association. Bradford & Bingley Building Society, on the other hand, was created in 1964 from a merger of the Bradford Equitable Building Society and the Bingley Permanent Building Society, both of which date back to 1851 in their company history.

Bradford & Bingley is currently one of the largest mortgage providers in the UK. It is also the fourth largest real estate provider in Great Britain and is divided into the two economic sectors of sales and lending.

Financial crisis

In the wake of the US financial crisis , the company was nationalized by the Treasury Department on September 28, 2008. By nationalizing the mortgage lender, Great Britain is taking on liabilities of £ 42.4 billion.

After nationalization, the 191 branches and 141 branches were sold to the Spanish Banco Santander for £ 612 million . The 2.7 million customers (with deposits of over £ 20 billion) are currently still served under the Bradford & Bingley branding . From 2010, in addition to the Bradford & Bingley branches, the Alliance & Leicester and Abbey National branches will appear under the Santander branding .
