Wilhelm Zopf

Friedrich Wilhelm Zopf (born December 12, 1846 in Roßleben , † June 24, 1909 in Münster ) was a German botanist and biologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Zopf ".

Life

He studied natural sciences at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin and received his doctorate in 1878 on the conidia fruits of Fumago at the University of Halle . From 1880 to 1883 he taught as an associate professor at the Agricultural University in Berlin . In 1882 he completed his habilitation at the University of Halle.

Zopf became known for his work on the systematics of mushrooms . In his day, he saw bacteria as fissure fungi . As a result, he researched the production of dyes in fungi and lichens . In 1881 Wilhelm Zopf was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1899 he was appointed full professor of botany at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster , where he also served as director of the botanical garden .

Zopf was the first to describe the genera Copromyxa Zopf , Hyphochytrium Zopf , Rhizidiomyces Zopf and Rhodococcus Zopf . Some species can also be traced back to him. The mushroom genera Zopfia Rabenh are named after him . , Zopfiella G.Winter and Zopfinula Kirschst.
