Brakel (also Braekel ) are an old breed of country chicken from Belgium , which belongs to the speckled chickens . As early as 1898 a breeders' community was formed in Nederbrakel , today the municipality of Brakel in East Flanders .
features
The Brakelhühner are considered to be stately in their country chicken shape . They carry their fully feathered tail quite high. They have banded mottled plumage. Their trunk is rather broad and rectangular, but with rounded edges. The hen does not have the full saddle drapery of the rooster. Both sexes have full neck hangings.
The cock's tail is lush and broad with long sickles, and its legs are slate blue. The medium-sized head has a single comb with 5 to 6 points, with the flag following the nape a little. The ear discs are medium-sized and bluish white. The wattles are medium in size.
In the past there were numerous variants, today only the "silver" and the "gold" color variants are common.
The silver head and neck hangings are pure white, but each feather is slightly blackish at the base. The back and saddle hangings are also white, but the covered upper halves of the feather are drawn.
With the golden ones, the drawing color is golden brown instead of silver white.
Existence and endangerment
The Brakel breed is rare and is considered an endangered breed of domestic animal . The BDRG and the GEH have classified the breed in the " Red List of Endangered Livestock Breeds 2013 " in hazard class III (endangered). After that there were 188 roosters and 928 hens in Germany in 2009.
