Branco Escola

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Branco Escola is a white wine variety .

It is an autochthonous variety in Portugal . There it is approved in the Lima and Braga subregions of the Vinho Verde growing area .

The variety makes wines of moderate quality. It can be very productive, but due to its susceptibility to various fungal diseases ( powdery mildew , downy mildew of the grapevine ...), its yield fluctuates greatly.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy white, greenish with a reddish tinge. The bronze-spotted young leaves are lightly woolly on the upper side and white-woolly hairy on the underside.
  • The large leaves are three- to five-lobed and chess-shaped (see also the article leaf shape ). The stalk bay is open in the shape of a lyre. The blade is bluntly serrated. The small teeth are closely set compared to other grape varieties.
  • The pyramidal grape is large and dense. The slightly elliptical to oval berries are medium to large in size and yellow-green in color. The berries have a thick skin and are neutral in taste.

Branco Escola is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
