Branisella is an extinct genus of primates that occurred around 26 million years ago in the Upper Oligocene in South America . Branisella isthe second oldest known genus of the New World monkeys after Perupithecus , the only primate group living in America today (with the exception of humans). The only scientifically described species of the genusso faris Branisella boliviana .
Initial description
The first description of the genus Branisella and its type species Branisella boliviana was published in 1969 by Robert Hoffstetter .
Meaning of the finds
The finds, mostly jawbones and individual teeth, come from a site in Bolivia . From the structure of the teeth it was deduced that the New World monkeys did not evolve from the Omomyidae , an extinct family of primates that were formerly at home in America - an extinct family of primates similar to the goblin lemurs - but rather form an ancestral sister group of the Old World monkeys and in an unknown way - probably sailing on driftwood - had crossed the Atlantic .
