Robert Hoffstetter

Robert Julien Hoffstetter (born June 11, 1908 , † December 29, 1999 ) was a French paleontologist. His research focus was the tertiary mammal fauna of South America. He is one of the pioneers of cladistics in France.

Live and act

Between 1946 and 1953 Hoffstetter spent in Ecuador and undertook numerous expeditions to Peru and Bolivia . In Bolivia he was the first paleontologist to unearth the fossil remains of the tertiary mammalian faunas of Salla-Luribay , Quebrada Honda and Achiri . He was also one of the scientists who studied the oldest primates and rodents in South America. In 1946 Hoffstetter described the bolyer snakes and in 1957 the dinosaur genus Lexovisaurus . In the 1950s Hoffstetter wrote one of the first snake systematics taking fossil species into account. In addition, Hoffstetter was considered an expert on the paleobiogeography of primates , rodents and marsupials .

Hoffstetter was director of the Center national de la recherche scientifique and in 1972 he took over the management of the Laboratoire de Paléontologie des Vertébrés et Paléontologie humaine in Paris from Jean Piveteau . At the University of Pierre and Marie Curie , he taught as a professor of palaeontology and vertebrate science .

The fossil taxa Archaeotrogon hoffstetteri , Cadurciguana hoffstetteri , Sallacyon hoffstetteri , Becklesius hoffstetteri , Paleotragus hoffstetteri , Habanocnus hoffsletteri and Euryzygomatomys hoffstetteri are named after Hoffstetter .
