Achiri is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Achiri is the central place of the canton Achiri in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Caquiaviri in the province Pacajes . The village is located on the Bolivian Altiplano at an altitude of 3900  m on one of the tributaries of the Río Desaguadero . Achiri is located halfway between Lake Titicaca in the north and Nevado Sajama 95 km away in the south, Bolivia's highest mountain at 6,542 m.

Achiri lies between the mountain ranges of the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Central in the Andean dry climate of the Andean plateau with an average annual rainfall of around 500 mm (see Nazacara climate diagram). The region has a distinct daytime climate, with mean temperatures fluctuating more during the day than during the year.

The annual average temperature of the region is 9 ° C, the monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 5 ° C in July and 10 ° C in December. The monthly precipitation is between under 10 mm in the dry season from May to August, and 100 to 125 mm in January and February.

Transport network

Achiri is located at a distance of 148 kilometers by road southwest of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 2 leads to El Alto , from there Ruta 19 in a south-westerly direction as an asphalt road to Viacha , from there as an unpaved road via Caquiaviri to Achiri and on to Charaña on the Chilean border.
