Caquiaviri is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Caquiaviri is the central place of the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Caquiaviri in the province of Pacajes . The village is located on the Bolivian Altiplano at an altitude of 3966  m on one of the tributaries to the Río Desaguadero , about fifty kilometers south of Lake Titicaca .

Caquiaviri lies between the mountain ranges of the Cordillera Oriental and the Cordillera Central in the Andean dry climate of the Altiplano . The region has the typical daytime climate of the high mountains near the equator, in which the mean temperature fluctuations over the course of the day are more pronounced than the seasonal fluctuations.

The annual average temperature of the region is around 7 ° C (see Comanche climate diagram), the monthly values ​​fluctuate between 4 ° C in June / July and just under 9 ° C in December. Caquiaviri is 100 kilometers by road southwest of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.

From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 2 leads to El Alto , from there Ruta 19 in a south-westerly direction as an asphalt road to Viacha and on as an unpaved road to Caquiaviri . The Ruta 19 then leads via Achiri to Charaña on the Chilean border.
