The Bratko-Kopec-Test is a test suite for examining the skill level in chess .

It consists of 24 positions, for each of which the best continuation must be found within two minutes. As an example, the diagram shows test position No. 1 of the Bratko-Kopec test. With Black to move, the tactical queen sacrifice 1.… Qd1 + can be found. In this way, the “chess intelligence” ( Elo number ) of both human and machine chess players, such as chess computers , can be estimated.

Based on studies from 1977, the test was in 1982 by the Slovenian computer scientist Ivan Bratko (* 1946) together with the American chess player and computer science - Professor IM Danny Kopec developed (1954-2016). Their test was a de facto standard for checking the playing strength of chess programs in the 1980s .

Tactical ability (T) is required in half of the 24 test positions . For the remaining positional tasks (P), a pawn lever can be found as a motif .

The Bednorz-Tönissen test (BT2450) can be regarded as a successor in the 1990s .
