Danny Kopec

Daniel "Danny" Kopec [ kɔpək ] (* 28. February 1954 in Kfar Saba , Israel ; † 12. June 2016 in New York City ) was an American chess player and computer science - Professor .

Life

After his training at Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire) and research on Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Donald Michie from 1976, he received his Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) at the Scottish University of Edinburgh with his thesis Human and Machine Representations of Knowledge ( German  "Human and machine representations of knowledge" ). He then taught AI and programming languages at the University of Maine in Orono (Maine) .

He was a chess trainer and author of numerous publications on AI , intelligent teaching systems, chess and computer chess . In addition, he designed his own opening system, the Kopec system , a variant in the Sicilian Defense , marked (after 1. e2 – e4 c7 – c5 2. Ng1 – f3 d7 – d6) by 3. Bf1 – d3!?. Together with the Slovenian computer scientist Ivan Bratko (* 1946), he developed the Bratko-Kopec test in 1982 , which was a de facto standard for testing chess programs in the 1980s . Kopec won the Scottish Individual Championship in 1980. In the British Four Nations Chess League he played from 1997 to 1999 for the Barbican Chess Club , with which he also took part in the European Club Cup in 1998 .

Danny Kopec died at the age of 62. He left behind his wife Sylvia, son David, sister Patinka and stepson Oliver.
