Tony Marsland

T. Anthony "Tony" Marsland (* approx. 1939 in Scotland ) is a Canadian emeritus professor of computer science and a computer chess pioneer . From 1992 to 1999 he was President of the International Computer Chess Association ICCA ( German "International Computer Chess Association " ).  

Life

Born in Scotland and moved to Kidderminster in England in 1939 , he went to school there from 1948 to 1951 and learned to play chess at an early age . In 1951 his family moved with him to Lancashire , where he attended Preston Grammar School . From 1955 he studied mathematics at the University of Nottingham . In 1960 he married Elizabeth Fox. In 1962 you went to the American company Boeing in Seattle . There he studied electrical engineering at the University of Washington and graduated in 1967 with a doctorate in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) . The subject of his dissertation was Adaptive Computer Programs - An Aid in Problem Analysis ( German  " Adaptive computer programs  - A help for problem analysis " ).

He then went to Bell Laboratories in New Jersey , where he worked as a computer scientist. He wrote his first chess program around 1970 and shortly thereafter moved to the Canadian University of Alberta , where he held a professorship in computer science for many years.

In 1992 he succeeded David Levy as President of the ICCA , today's International Computer Games Association ICGA ( German  "International Computer Games Association " ). He was involved in the organization of the famous "man against machine" duel between the world chess champion Garry Kasparov against Deep Blue .

Tony Marsland is the author of numerous scientific publications and, together with Jonathan Schaeffer, is the editor of Computers, Chess, and Cognition , a "Bible of Computer Chess ".
