Jonathan Schaeffer

Jonathan Schaeffer (* 1957 in Toronto , Ontario ) is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Alberta in Canada . He is a globally recognized authority on artificial intelligence - algorithms for chess , checkers , poker and other computer games . In 2007 he was made a member of the Royal Society of Canada .

Schaeffer is the main author of the Chinook computer program , which has been the world's most powerful checkers program since the 1990s. In April 2007, Schaeffer and his team were able to solve the checkers game completely with the help of a computer (from the start of the game; not from any score) and provide evidence that checkers end in a draw if both players played correctly.

In addition to numerous scientific publications, Schaeffer is the author of the book One Jump Ahead , in which he describes his efforts in the 1990s to develop a computer program that would defeat Marion Tinsley . Tinsley was the world's strongest checkers player and had a reputation for being invincible.

Offices

He has been President of the International Computer Games Association since January 2019, succeeding David Levy .
