The Klotzbücher brewery , also known as Deutschherren Brewery for the last seven years , was a brewery in Bad Mergentheim in the Main-Tauber district in Baden-Württemberg from 1791 to 1988 .

history

In 1791 the brewery was founded in Bad Mergentheim. Since the city was the official seat of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 1526 to 1809 , when the name was changed in 1982, based on the Teutonic Order, the name was changed to Deutschherren Brewery . Before that, the brewery had the following company names and legal form additions in its history:

  • Founded in 1791 (unknown)
  • 1831 Josef Klotzbücher brewery
  • 1879 Georg Josef Klotzbücher brewery
  • 1911 Carl Josef Klotzbücher brewery
  • 1964 C. Klotzbücher Brewery
  • 1982 Deutschherren Brewery C. Klotzbücher KG
  • 1984 Deutschherren Brewery C. Klotzbücher GmbH
  • 1988 Deutschherren Brewery GmbH

The street name “ Am Eissee ” in Mergentheim still reminds us today that the so-called Eissee was flooded with the water of the Wachbach over a weir by the local brewers on cold winter days . Until 1920 the ice was extracted there for cooling. For this purpose, the meadows were flooded and the resulting ice sheets were then either placed in the ice cellar or stored directly in the brewery cellars. It was cold enough there that the ice for cooling beer could be stored until summer. Natural ice production was to remain important until the early 1950s, before rising labor costs led to the introduction of artificial forms of cooling.

In 1988 the Deutschherren Brauerei GmbH was taken over by the Würzburger Hofbräu after a corresponding contract had been signed in 1982 and the Würzburger Hofbräu took over the running of the business ever since. This ended the 187-year history of the Klotzbücher brewery .

As a result, a restaurant was operated at the site until the 2010s under the name of Brauhaus Klotzbücher .
