history

The Schumacher brewery goes back to the takeover of the “Im Sunrise” brewery in Citadellstrasse 12 in 1838 by the brewer Johannes Matthias Schumacher. In 1902 his son Fritz took over the brewery and his brother Ferdinand II bought the restaurant Zum Goldenen Kessel at Bolkerstraße 44, in the middle of the old town . 17 years later he also bought the brewery at Oststrasse 123 from his brother Fritz. After completing the renovations and extensions on Oststrasse in 1925, the brewing operations in the old town ceased. From then on, the Golden Kessel was run as a brewery bar and leased to Josef Schnitzler. In the 1920s and 1930s, the brewery had its beer coasters designed by artists from the Düsseldorf Art Academy , including the painter Richard Bloos .

During the Second World War, both locations were destroyed by air raids in 1942 (Bolkerstraße) and 1943 (Oststraße). Since the roof area of the brewing area on Oststrasse was mainly damaged, brewing operations could be resumed here shortly after the end of the war. In 1948, after a provisional restoration, the plant in Bolkerstrasse was put back into operation. In 1955 Ferdinand II sold the brewery and brewery bar on Oststrasse and Bolkerstrasse to his nephew master brewer Hans Schnitzler and his wife Thea . In 1958 the architect Ernst Günther combined the two former buildings 44 and 46 on Bolkerstraße to form a new building, built it up and reopened the brewery bar.

After Hans Schnitzler's death in 1966, his wife Thea Schnitzler took over the business. From 1980 to 1990, the brewing technology was modernized. After Thea's death in 1991, her daughter Gertrud became the successor, who has been running the business together with Nina Thea Ungermann since 2013. In 1994 the restaurant Zum golden Kessel was renovated and in 1997 the inn area on Oststraße was completely renovated . The golden boiler was completely renovated in 2007 and the areas such as the kitchen, ventilation and electrical installation were renewed.

From September 2019, the Schumacher brewery will be the new Altbier partner in the Merkur Spiel-Arena. The Schumacher brewery will hire three more brewers to meet the additional demand in the arena. Fortuna Düsseldorf did not feel properly involved in the decision, because the Frankenheim brewery pays more than 400,000 euros a year to the football club as a sponsor .

Types of beer

  • Schumacher Alt
  • Schumacher Latzenbier
  • Schumacher 1838s

The Schumacher Alt is a traditional beer with an alcohol content of 4.6% vol. It is offered in a 1 liter swing top bottle as well as in oak barrels and plastic-coated stainless steel barrels with 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 50 liters. In 2009 around 30,000 hectoliters of Schumacher beer were produced. Since May 1, 2019, it has also been bottled in 0.33 liter reusable beer bottles with a swing top.

The Latzenbier falls into the same category as the embroidery from the Uerige and Brauerei zum Schlüssel breweries and the Christmas beer from the Füchschen brewery ; it is brewed more strongly, contains more original wort, malt and, as a strong beer, has an alcohol content of 5.5% vol. The beer is only served on the third Thursday of March, September and November; it is also only available as bottled beer in limited quantities on these days.

The 1838er is a fruity, top-fermented Altbier that is brewed with special aroma hops from Australia and Canada, which give the beer a citrus-fruity note. The 1838er has been brewed since the 175th anniversary of the brewery on May 1st, 2013 and has an alcohol content of 5.0% vol. It is sold in 1 liter swing top bottles.
