Bloos studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There were Peter Janssen the Elder , Willy Sparrow and Carl Ernst Forberg his teachers. Like his contemporaries Max Stern and Willy Lucas , he was trained in outdoor painting there. In 1906 he went to Paris, where he stayed until 1914. During his eight-year stay in Paris and his contacts with artistic circles at Montmartre and in the Café du Dôme, he internalized French impressionism like hardly any other painter from the Düsseldorf school. Accordingly, his motifs were characterized by crowded avenues, parks and marketplaces. From 1908 he sent exhibitions at the Munich Secession and the Paris Salon . He was also represented at the Salon des Indépendants from 1909 to 1913. From 1910 to 1924 he took part in the salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts and created genre scenes and Parisian cityscapes. In 1914 he returned to Düsseldorf. After the First World War he lived there at Oberkasseler Cheruskerstraße 21.

Bloos began with his etchings during his time in Paris. These etchings were described as "unquestionably the best German graphic" (Horn 1928) and caricature society and life in society in a satirical and humorous way. Today there are works by Richard Bloos in the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig and in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn .

Richard Bloos had a brother, Willi Bloos (1884–1959), who also studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and became a painter. Both Bloos brothers were members of the Düsseldorf artist association Malkasten , Richard Bloos from 1901 to 1906 and from 1916 to 1957.

When his house in Düsseldorf was destroyed during the Second World War, he went to Gerolstein with his wife Gisela, a miniature painter . As a child he visited the district architect, art collector and family friend Josef Krahe. During the Second World War Bloos could not practice oil painting as well as etching for most of the time because he lacked the accessories. However, it was there that he discovered his love for the petrified sea lilies that can be found in the Gerolstein limestone layers. He soon started collecting, sketching and watercoloring these sea lilies. He was also inspired by the environment of the Eifel, which became another motif in his works. Watercolors of castles, town houses and old mills from this time still exist today.

Richard Bloos died on May 12, 1957. His grave is still preserved today in the Düsseldorf North Cemetery .
