The Brauhaus Schreckenskammer (also: Zur Schreckenskammer ) in Cologne is a restaurant located in Cologne's old town north , which brews its own variety of Kölsch and is in the tradition of one of the oldest breweries in the city.

According to the company's own chronicle, the original building of the brewery in Goldgasse was mentioned for the first time in a shrine register in 1442 and listed as a brewery in a tax list in 1487. The name and owner of the brewery changed several times over the next few centuries. The name Zum Mailaen has been handed down from 1589 , a new building in the 1650s was named Zum Marienbildchen.

The last proper brewmaster of the Marienbildchen at Johannistraße 42 / corner Goldgasse (today the bus station or the location of the commercial hotel on Breslauer Platz ) was Christian Firmenich in 1798, before the Cologne guilds were dissolved by the French revolutionary government. In 1912 the Cologne address book lists the brewer Johann Krips as the owner of the Chamber of Terror at Johannisstrasse 40/42. He had a new building built in 1912 and sold the brewery in November 1933 to the brewer Ferdinand Wirtz and his son Cornelius, father and grandfather of the current shareholders Hermann-Josef Maria Wirtz and Georg Wirtz.

The building at its original location was destroyed by Allied bombing raids in 1943. After the war, instead of the destroyed row of houses, the municipal bus station was set up on part of the site, and the corner property was given to another owner. As compensation, Cornelius Wirtz received the property at its current location in Ursulagartenstrasse not far from the Romanesque church of St. Ursula . It was not until 1960 that the restaurant was reopened here - again under the name of the Chamber of Horrors. It is run by the Wirtz family to this day and was expanded and expanded to include a neighboring building in 2009.

The origin of the name "Schreckenskammer" is unclear. There are anecdotes according to which exams at a neighboring railway training institute took place in the rooms of the restaurant, which could be a "horror" for the examinees. An alternative theory is that those sentenced to death would have received their executioner's meal on the way to the Weckschnapp execution site at the inn .

The restaurant serves the in-house chamber of horrors - Kölsch . Until 2017 it was brewed in Lohnsud by the Radeberger Group , and since 2018 by the Kölner Früh brewery . Since then it has also been sold in beverage stores and supermarkets. Compared to other Kölsch brands with an average alcohol content of 4.8%, the Schreckenskammer-Kölsch has about 5.0% alcohol and is traditionally bottled in euro bottles without carbonic acid .
